Living room carpets have to be the most popular, because having a soft, plush carpet in there is awesome, because kids love to lie on the floor and play games, watch TV, or have a sleep over in the living room. Carpets are also perfect for the bedroom; they give the room the look of comfort and just add a cozy feeling to the whole decor. There are a few rooms that carpet should stay out of, like the kitchen and the bathrooms. Other than those rooms there is a carpet that would be perfect for every other room.
Most carpets are made from either a mixed blend of different fibers, polyester, man made acrylic fibers, and the most popular fiber is nylon. You should choose a carpet based on where you will be putting the carpet, and how much traffic the carpet will sustain. It is extremely important to keep these things in mind because carpets are all created differently, for different needs and uses.

If a certain piece of the carpet gets overly dirty and can not be cleaned then you can remove the needed tiles and lay down new ones, and your carpet will look brand new again.
Carpets need to be installed by someone that has experience and the proper tools to get the job done. Laying carpet requires certain tools to help stretch the carpet until it is tight, to keep it from getting lumpy. So if you do not know how to lay carpet then just hire a professional.
Personally I like carpets and hardwood flooring, but people buying flooring in North America are still stuck on carpet. Many people like carpet to still be put in their living rooms and bedrooms, just because of their own personal preference and level of comfort.
