I've lost my pattern book!?

Why do composition books (grade school) always have that marble pattern on them?

The pattern is kindof distracting and almost hypnotizes you when you look at it. Where does it come from?


You can get solid colors, or just ones with regular pictures.  I actually prefer the marble.
